Opaskwayak Cree Nation Community Circle
The Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN) is situated on the Saskatchewan River across from the community of The Pas. It is 630km northwest of Winnipeg. OCN is an active, self-governing community with a population of nearly 5,000 people. The Opaskwayak Cree Nation Community Circle (represented by the Opaskwayak Education Authority) joined the VOICE Research Project in 2012. Currently, the OCN Community Circle has two success pathways underway. The Aboriginal Resources Pathway is aimed at educational achievement through the use of Aboriginal literature and resources. The Creative Connections – Pathways to Success provides students with a variety of community-based opportunities to fully explore their artistic potential and build their identity as young Cree people. With the support of the VOICE Research Project, the OCN Community Circle has completed a Cree language survey in the community. A major finding of the survey was that 97% of the more than 1,400 community respondents were supportive of the Cree language program.
